"The New Economy Project"
on view November 1 - 23, 2002
opening reception Friday, November 1, 5:30 - 7:30 pm
Allston Skirt Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of an exhibition of new paintings by Roberta Paul, whose latest body of work makes elegant and disturbing use of images of clocks and flags. With these paintings, Ms. Paul extends her ongoing exploration of time and memory by taking simple yet powerful symbols representing notions that are both universal and personal: time (and the way we measure it) and country (and the emblem we use to represent it). Ms. Paul translates these concepts to canvas with a unique sense of hope and vulnerability.
Ms. Paul's work was featured in Allston Skirt Gallery's inaugural exhibition in 1999, and again in exhibitions here in 2000 and 2001. Her work has been widely exhibited throughout the region, most recently in "Domestic Culture: Home in Visual Culture" at the ICA at Maine College of Art in Portland, Maine, and she has been selected for inclusion in the upcoming Northeastern Edition of New American Paintings, a juried exhibition-in-print curated by Charlotta Kotik from the Brooklyn Museum of Art. Her work is in the collections of the DeCordova Museum, Wellington Management Corporation, and Fidelity Investments, among others.
In our project room, we are introducing the work of Magda Fernandez, whose cohesive installation "The New Economy Project" takes on the subjects of ownership and consumption in the modern world with wit and charm and style. Fernandez looks at our relationship to everything from outer space to human genomes, creating cheerful, beaded copyright symbols and offshore oil drills in this artist's first one-person exhibition.
Catalogues and images available.
Please note: we will be hosting a breakfast and informal gallery talk with the artists at the gallery on Thursday, November 14 from 10-11 am.
