ALLSTON SKIRT GALLERY presents work by

On view March 9 - April 28, 2001
Opening Reception Friday, March 9, 6 - 8 p.m.

"Thinking is more interesting than knowing, but less interesting than looking." Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Working not only on paper and on canvas, but also on linen napkins, flowerpots, suitcases and directly on walls, Sharon Kaitz follows the tracks of our everyday lives, elaborating upon our most simple, routine paths and simplifying our most complex interactions. The excitement of her work derives not only from the variety of media that she involves, but also from the manner in which she engages and challenges assumptions about the historical and social tracks we make: in particular those of women seeking a point of balance. In Kaitz’s work, the objects, colored shapes, lines and words, forever at the point of toppling or on the edge of meaning, are held in place by the strength of her aesthetic. Her defining subject is a poetic journey, a songline that abbreviates time with humor and tenacity.

B. Wurtz is absorbed by the most common everyday artifacts: plastic bags, socks and, most recently, buttons, have each been the source of bodies of work for him over the past thirty years. He has written, "I decided to limit the found objects I use to those having to do with food, clothing and shelter, the basic categories of survival. The fourth ingredient is my input into the other three -- my subjective and psychological view of the world. Sort of the phenomenology first, followed by the psychology." The homely, colorful plastic buttons that form the basis for this group of Wurtz’s paintings echo the iconography of early abstraction, the avant-garde sensibility of textile design in the early 20th century, and nod to Warhol and Duchamp in passing.

ALLSTON SKIRT GALLERY is located at 129 Braintree Street in Allston, second floor, near Able Rug and the Sports Depot. We are open Wednesday through Saturday, from noon - 5 p.m., and by appointment. For more information, please call Randi Hopkins or Beth Kantrowitz at 617-254-7027.
