The Devil is in the Details

at Allston Skirt Gallery
November 30 - December 29, 2001
opening reception Friday, November 30, 6-8 pm

ALLSTON SKIRT GALLERY is pleased to present "The Devil is in the Details," an exhibition of work by Tomma Abts, Brian Calvin, Vincent Fecteau, Maureen Gallace, Lily van der Stokker, Paul Thek and Richard Tuttle, organized by Rena Conti and Ivan Moskowitz, with an essay by Bruce Hainley.

Conti and Moskowitz describe their concept for the show as follows:

In the midst of a rush to incorporate new technology into art, we have decided to highlight our interest in a group of artists who have pursued decidedly low-tech projects. These artists, although employing different traditional mediums, share a pursuit of a highly developed personal language or vernacular. The starting place for each is humble. Upon first viewing, each seems slight and perhaps easy to dismiss-small geometric gestures (Tomma Abts, Vincent Fecteau, Richard Tuttle) camp (Lily van der Stokker), kitsch (Paul Thek), or Sunday painting (Brian Calvin, Maureen Gallace). However, further viewing reveals a wealth of sophisticated choices, frustrating easy readings. The result is a well-defined project at once individual, even idiosyncratic, yet adhering to specific self-imposed constraints. It is within these confines that a personal internal logic emerges, the foundation for artistic invention.

Art critic Bruce Hainley has written a provocative essay on these themes to accompany the exhibition; a copy of it is available at the gallery, or by request.
